How Leverage Ratios Inform Credit Decisions

A simple visual starting point for leverage and earnings sensitivity.

Debt / EBITDA compares debt with an earnings measure. It is a useful starting point for discussion, but it is not a direct measure of cash available to repay a loan.

For a synthetic business with $420m of debt and $100m of EBITDA, leverage is 4.2x. If EBITDA falls to $75m and debt is unchanged, leverage rises to 5.6x.

The dashboard below uses those multiples as preset illustrations. It does not model a real borrower or predict a credit outcome.
